Songs, Psalms and Music

The Bible has many poems that praise God. Sometimes these poems are made into songs. Here is a song-poem from a book in the Bible called the Book of Psalms.

A Psalm of Praise

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
Burst into jubilant song with music;

Make music to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of singing,

With trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn -
Shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
The world, and all who live in it.

Let the rivers clap their hands,
Let the mountains sing together for joy.

Discussion: What do you like about this poem? What surprises you? Do you think the writer had a good imagination? How can rivers clap their hands? How can mountains sing?

Craft:

Making musical instruments: People all over the world make musical instruments out of everyday things - boxes, string, pieces of wood, hollow sticks and other things. See what you can make out of the materials in this box of supplies.

About the Psalms: The book of Psalms is a book in the Bible of songs and prayers. (The word "psalsms" is one of those words with a silent "p")
