Innkeeper/Narrator: Hello. I am an innkeeper from the town of Bethlehem.

Magi/Narrator: And I am a magi from the East.

Innkeeper/Narrator: We are here to tell you the story of Christmas.

Magi/Narrator: The story begins here in the town of Nazareth.

Innkeeper/Narrator: For many years, the prophets had told the people that God would send his wonderful son to the world. His son would guide us forever. The world waited for this wonderful savior.

Magi/Narrator: One day in Nazareth, a man named Joseph and some other carpenters were working quietly. Joseph was happy because he was engaged to be married to a woman named Mary. Mary was in her garden. It was a beautiful day. She kneeled down to pray.

[Mary kneels and bows her head down.]

Magi/Narrator: The angel Gabriel appeared.

[Gabriel enters. Mary looks up.]

Gabriel: Hello Mary. Don't be afraid. I am the angel Gabriel. I have wonderful news for you.

Mary: Oh!

Gabriel: You are going to be the mother of the savior who has been promised. Soon, you will have a baby son. You will name him Jesus.

Mary: Oh! This is amazing news!

Magi/Narrator: The angel also appeared to Joseph in a dream.

[Joseph lies down to sleep. Gabriel walks from the garden to the carpentry shop.]

Gabriel: Joseph, I am the angel Gabriel. Mary is going to have a son. He will be the savior who has been promised. You will name the baby Jesus. I want to you take care of Mary and the baby.

Joseph (waking up): This is wonderful news.

Magi/Narrator: So Joseph and Mary prepared for the baby to be born. Mary sewed blankets and clothes for the baby and Joseph built a crib and some toys for the baby.

[Mary and Joseph are quietly working.]

Innkeeper/Narrator: It was almost time for the baby to be born. But one day, the emperor declared that everyone had to travel to their hometowns to register and pay taxes. Joseph told Mary that they had to go to Bethlehem.

[Joseph walks to the garden where Mary is sitting.]

Joseph: Mary, did you hear the news? We have to travel to Bethlehem.

Mary: But the baby will be born soon. How can we travel that far?

Donkey: I will take you.

Magi/Narrator: So Mary and Joseph and the donkey traveled to Bethlehem. It was a long journey. Many other people were travelling to their hometowns also. The roads were very crowded. They were tired when they got to Bethlehem.

[Mary, Joseph, the donkey and all the other carpenters and animals walk around the church and exit out the back.]

SCENE 2: Bethlehem

[Micah 5:2 is displayed on the overhead screen:
"The Lord says, "Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times."]

[The Magi/Narrator, Innkeeper, and the Innkeeper's Granddaughter are standing in the middle of the scene. Some shepherds and sheep are on one side. There is a stable with a manger on the other side. Mary and Joseph and the donkey are in the hallway.]

Magi/Narrator: When Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem, they looked for a place to stay. There were many inns in Bethlehem, but they were all full. There was no room anywhere.

[Mary, Joseph and donkey walk to where the innkeeper's Granddaughter is standing.]

Innkeeper's Granddaughter: I'm sorry, we have no room.

Innkeeper/Narrator: But she felt sorry for Mary and Joseph. There was something special about them. We decided that they could stay in the stable out back. We made them as comfortable as possible.

Innkeeper's Granddaughter: Come on, I'll bring you out to the stable.

Mary: Thank you!

[Mary, Joseph, donkey, and Granddaughter go to the stable and sit down. They put the baby doll into the manger.]

Innkeeper/Narrator: That night, the baby Jesus was born!

[Gabriel appears to the shepherds.]

Gabriel: I bring you wonderful news! The son who has been promised has been born, tonight, in Bethlehem.

Shepherds: Oh! This is wonderful news! We must go see him!

[Shepherds and sheep travel to the stable and kneel down.]

Magi/Narrator: A star appeared in the sky. Wise men saw the star and knew that it meant that the promised one had been born. They came from far away to bring gifts.

All: A child is born to us! A son is given to us!
